10 Years Since I Broke My Wrist

  • The orthopedic surgeon looked at my injury, looked at me, and said "Skateboarding?"

I said "yeah how'd you know?"

He said "generally guys in their late 20s who break that specific bone (navicular) in their wrist are doing some sort of board sport.  Since it's summer, I assumed it was skateboarding and not snowboarding."

He then went on to describe these protective gloves that motorcyclists sometimes wear...with skid plates and stuff...so that when you wipe out, you can absorb the impact across your entire upper body instead of bearing it all across your wrists and forearms.

Slide gloves.  He was literally describing slide gloves.  He said that slide gloves coupled with elbow pads can be tremendously helpful in reducing injuries when you're "just kicking around".

Stay safe homies.  Do what you gotta do to protect yourself, I'm not trying to be preachy, I'm just trying to offer advice from the perspective of a has been.
