Help me choose my next skate shoes...

Which of these 5 shoes should I choose?

  • In my hunt for true-leather, high top/mid top, zero-drop barefoot shoes that can be converted to skate shoes with brake soles and a thicker insole, I have narrowed it down to 5 possible candidates (see pics below).

Which one of these would, in your opinion, be best for downhill/freeride ankle road rash protection? I personally don't like too much ankle support, so I'll probably leave the top part undone/unlaced. Also provide reasoning for your choice if possible. Thanks!

  • These all seem the same to me. Why do you want barefoot style shoes? Most people wear vans or Jordan's to longboard.

I think that any of these would be similar, they aren't popular so no one will have any direct feedback.

If you don't like high tops, you can just get low tops.

  • @Gabriel Fockler True, if they're all kinda the same then I'll probably go for price then.

I don't exactly want a barefoot shoe, but I do want a zero drop heel, and my feet are just too wide for normal shoe brands.

When I eventually do get these, I'll be changing the stock insoles to 6mm cushiony insoles and adding brake soles to the bottom which will be at least an extra 5mm thick. Therefore, it won't really be a barefoot shoe anymore.

  • @Nick Amarit They only have em in black but I enjoy vans hightops in the wide version.

  • @Nick Amarit

Barebarics Zing High Top and Skinners Oldschooler High Top look to have the most protection out of the ones you listed

  • @Matt Needs Wheels Okay, thanks. I'll consider getting either the Zing or the Oldschooler. Is it the thickness around the ankles that makes them have better protection?

BTW, I can't wear Vans at my size, unless I go up by like 2.5 sizes because my feet are just way too wide. And even the wide versions are like only a half size bigger in width? Haven't really tried the wides on my feet yet, so can't say for sure, but regardless, a size 11 foot wearing a size 13 or a 13.5 shoe will have a lot of overhang, which I don't really like. With the shoes I listed, I should be able to wear my size 11 with ample width left.

(My feet measurements are 11⅛" long and 4¼" wide.)
